CDV is busting out with more console games than ever, and at their recent San Francsico demo day, the little upstart I Heart Geeks! (or I Love Geeks) for the Nintendo DS threatened to practically steal the show from larger-presence console titles like Sacred 2. We’re definitely looking forward to this one. And since the game’s protagonist is a geek who’s constantly harassed by school bullies, this one can be safely said to have a decent-sized installed userbase. Characters and backstory come courtesy of Marc Ecko.
Basically, it’s the DS’s bid for The Incredible Machine—take a bunch of toys, tools and various sundry handy-dandy objects, and put your puzzle-solving noggin to the ol’ physics-based, Rube Goldberg test. The top screen displays the current field of play, and you can select the pieces and items you want to use on the lower screen; then, you’ll swap screens so you can place and manipulate the chosen pipe-segment, platform, or what have you. There’s also an in-game hint system to indicate where certain items go in the grand mechanical scheme—but no real nerd wants to fall back on that, do they? After all, you’ve got some bullies to best and some out-of-your-league-cheerleaders to impress here.
There’s even a multiplayer mode of sorts—timed challenges on certain puzzles, basically. Winnings is seemingly slanted in favor of the player who has unlocked—and hence, already conquered—the puzzles in question; it’s not clear if this has been addressed yet, nor whether multiplayer is local or online. I Heart Geeks! will reportedly offer 100 multi-solution puzzles.
