E3 2004 Coverage

Once a year, gaming geeks from around the world pack up their promotional Nintendo backpacks and slowly make their way to the Los Angeles Convention Center. The reason behind this massively multiplayer May migration?

E3, where geeks and games collide.

E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Or as we prefer to call it, Hell Week.

This year's show runs from May 12-14. Once again, the intrepid GR staff will be on hand to check out hundreds of upcoming games and peripherals in our undying effort to tell you what's cool, what's uncool, and what has the potential to be cool provided it gets a haircut. We'll be updating from the show each day with a batch of new game info, but the fun doesn't end there - we'll be posting plenty of new previews for a number of anticipated releases after the show, not to mention GR's Best Of E3 Awards and Editor in Chief Ben Silverman's annual E3 Wrap-Up Spectacular.

Enough with the pep talk...on with the show!

June 7 - POST SHOW UPDATE #7

And so we end with our Best of E3 2004 Awards! Three cheers for the winners...and the official end of E3 2004.

May 28 - POST SHOW UPDATE #6

So we found a new problem with E3 2004: there were so many solid games at the show, giving out awards is tougher than it usually is. In truth, we were hoping to have our Best Of E3 awards up today, but it turns out we'll need a little more time to argue over the winners. We tried flipping coins, arm wrestling and even picking names out a hat, but to no avail.

In its place, we not-so-proudly present Games Gone Wild!, Duke's expose about sex, games, and sex. And sex. And games.

In case you're still here, you should also check out our new preview for Jade Empire, Bioware's awesome upcoming action/RPG. If you had any doubts, we'll squash 'em in a jiffy.

May 25 - POST SHOW UPDATE #5

Whoops! We forgot to mention our sweet new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. preview yesterday. Go check that out, yo.

Other gaming websites tell you what you want to hear, but GR is proud to tell you what WE want to hear, a theme demonstrated perfectly in Ben's Enormous E3 Wrap-Up! Buckle up.

May 21 - POST SHOW UPDATE #4

We round out the week with a preview of Advent Rising. Haven't heard of it? Shame on you! Or maybe shame on us for not previewing it earlier. Either way, let's put all this shame behind us and focus on what might possibly be the sleeper hit of the year.

May 19 - POST SHOW UPDATE #3

We decided to take a day off from putting up screen and fact pages in order to get crackin' on those previews, and lo and behold, it worked! At least a little. We advise you to immediately check out our big preview of the prettiest game at E3 2004, Splinter Cell 3.

May 18 - POST SHOW UPDATE #2

Like the fabled robot Johnny Five from the film Short Circuit, we figured you needed more input. So courtesy of EA, Eidos and LucasArts, we deliver:

May 17 - POST SHOW UPDATE #1

Having spent the weekend sleeping and traveling (often at the same time), the GR staff triumphantly returned to the compound today toting bags overflowing with geek love! Hooray! No one died! Unless you count Duke, though he's a zombie, after all, so he was already dead to begin with, sorta.

At any rate, behold our first post-show preview in the gorgeous Brothers in Arms from Ubisoft. And as we continue to sort through the carnage and start whipping up more previews, feast your eyes on the latest batch of E3 assets:

Sony

Ratchet & Clank: Up Yer Arsenal (PS2)
Rise of the Kasai (PS2)
Sly 2: Band of Thieves (PS2)

Square/Enix

Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)
Musashi: Samurai Legend (PS2)
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PS2)

May 14 - DAY THREE!

Bones aching, eyes bloodshot and voices obliterated, the GR Staff is in rough shape, though it's nothing that some serious cocktails and about 15 hours of sleep won't cure.

But before officially passing out, we did a little work. Look:

Majesco

Advent Rising (PC | Xbox)
Bloodrayne 2 (PS2 | Xbox | PC)

Microsoft

Conker: Live and Reloaded (Xbox)
Halo 2 (Xbox)
MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf (Xbox)

Sega

Altered Beast (PS2)
Blood Will Tell (PS2)
Otogi 2 (Xbox)

May 13 - DAY TWO!

Tired? Us? After only one day?

You betcha!

We're not saying we're in bad shape or anything, but we're also not saying we're in good shape or anything. Ten hours of wandering around the LA Convention Center can be tough on the feet, especially Duke's weird, webbed feet. He was a lonely child.

But unlike our mutant leader, you won't be lonely with the goodies from Activision, Namco and THQ we managed to hoist up onto Ye Olde Website:

Activision

Lemony Snickets (PS2 | Xbox | GC | PC)
Rome: Total War (PC)
Spider-Man 2 (PS2 | Xbox | GC | PC)
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (PC)

Namco

Ace Combat 5 (PS2)
Baten Kaitos (GC)
Dead to Rights II (PS2 | Xbox)
Ghost Hunter (PS2)
Smash Court Tennis 2 (PS2)
Xenosaga II (PS2)

THQ

Full Spectrum Warrior (Xbox)
The Incredibles (PS2 | Xbox | GC | PC)
The Punisher (PS2 | Xbox)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (PC)
WWE Day of Reckoning (GC)

May 12 - DAY ONE!

The GR staff is full of verve and gusto, due largely to excessive amounts of pre-show coffee and overcompensation for our inevitable decline. We attacked the convention center like rabid wolves and gobbled up all kinds of sweet gaming info, only to barf it out now for your perusal:

Midway

Area 51 (PS2 | Xbox)
Midway Arcade Treasures 2 (PS2 | Xbox | GC)
Mortal Kombat: Deception (PS2 | Xbox)
NARC (PS2)
Shadow Hearts Covenant (PS2)

Nintendo

Advance Wars: Under Fire (GC)
Fire Emblem (GC)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GC)
Paper Mario 2 (GC)

Rockstar

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)

Vivendi

The Bard's Tale (PS2 | Xbox)
The Chronicles of Riddick (Xbox)
Cold Winter (PS2)
Evil Genius (PC)
Ground Control 2 (PC)
Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude (PC | PS2 | Xbox)
Men of Valor (PC | Xbox)
Red Ninja (PS2 | Xbox)
Spyro: A Hero's Tail (PS2 | Xbox | GC)
Tribes: Vengeance (PC)
